SQL Server is a business critical application that requires high availability protection, regardless of where it is deployed. In the cloud, you need to protect SQL Server from downtime if the cloud instance or the cloud provider fails. However, traditional solutions, such as shared storage clusters may not be practical or even possible in the cloud. Learn how real enterprises are leveraging the flexibility of SANLess clusters to provide high availability and disaster recovery protection for SQL Server in the cloud without the limitations of shared storage.

White Paper: How to Build a SANless SQL Server Failover Cluster Instance in Google Cloud Platform

If you are going to host SQL Server on the Google Cloud Platform (GCP) you will want to make sure it is highly available with a SQL Failover Cluster. One of the best and most economical ways to do that is to build a SQL Server Failover Cluster Instance (FCI). In this guide, we will walk through the steps to build a two-node failover cluster between two instances in the same region, but in different Zones, within the GCP.

SIOS Provides High Availability and Disaster Protection to Epicure

SIOS Provides High Availability and Disaster Protection to Epicure

Epicure Protects Business Critical SQL Server, Provides High Availability And Disaster Protection With Amazon EC2 And SIOS #SANLess Clustering Software

Case Study: Epicure Selections — SIOS DataKeeper SANless Clusters

Epicure needed a solution to provide High Availability and Disaster Protection for their two websites. Both of which are highly critical to their business operations.

The websites run on a single server using two instances of SQL Server Standard Edition—one for each website. As the company expanded its products and services, the Epicure IT department needed an update. It had to ensure both of its business-critical websites would continue to operate in the event of failures or disasters. They decided to move both websites from a third-party hosted facility to its on-premises data center. Also, to use Amazon Web Services EC2 cloud for disaster protection and recovery.

As part of this website update process, Epicure IT staff wanted something efficient and cost effective. A solution that can provide high availability and disaster protection for both websites. And at the same time, continuing to run them on two instances of SQL Server Standard Edition.

The SIOS software was a fit for Epicure. SIOS was an easy, cost-efficient way to provide High Availability and disaster protection and recovery for its business-critical SQL Server applications. All without the cost and complexity of building out a remote DR site or purchasing costly SAN storage or SQL Server Enterprise Edition licenses.

Healthcare Platform Eliminated Need For Shared Storage with SIOS DataKeeper Cluster Edition

Case Study: Leading Healthcare Provider — SIOS DataKeeper Cluster Edition

A leading provider of enterprise platforms for the home healthcare provider market decided to add SIOS DataKeeper Cluster Edition as a high availability (HA) solution to minimize the risk of downtime. It had relied on its SQL Server databases to provide fast, efficient service to its end users.

Many of the company’s important applications rely on SQL Server running on a physical server in their on-premises data center. They wanted to protect their SQL Server Replication Distributor – a central database required for managing and updating all SQL databases.

The company’s best solution was to use Windows Server Failover Clustering to create a two node cluster using their existing server hardware, which was already equipped with solid state disk storage. By adding SIOS DataKeeper Cluster Edition software to their cluster, they eliminated the need for shared storage. SIOS software uses fast block level replication to synchronize local storage in both of the cluster nodes, creating a storage environment that appears to WSFC as a SAN. They connected the nodes directly using crossover cables and 10Gig NICs to eliminate the cost of a network switch and ensure the fastest possible replication for real time synchronization of the cluster nodes.

Mavis Discount Tire Enjoys High Availability Cluster Protection With SIOS

SIOS DataKeeper Delivers High Availability Cluster Protection For Business Critical SQL Server to Mavis Discount Tire

Case Study: Mavis Discount Tire — SIOS DataKeeper Clusters

Leading regional tire retailer Mavis Discount Tire uses SIOS DataKeeper to enable cost-effective, high performance and high availability cluster protection for business critical SQL Server.

The company needed a way to provide high availability (HA) protection for its SQL Server applications and databases that would not impede performance. They were also concerned about the performance impact that SAN storage could have had on the highly transactional SQL Server databases.

The Mavis Discount Tire IT department chose SIOS SANless software to provide high availability cluster protection and disaster recovery (DR) protection without the need for a SAN. Edward Schwartz, CIO, Mavis Discount Tire said that they used WSFC to create two node clusters for their SQL environments in the same way a traditional cluster is created. He added, “we simply added SIOS DataKeeper Cluster Edition software to enable us to use local storage in a #SANLess configuration.” The SIOS software uses performance-optimized host-based replication to synchronize local storage on the primary and standby nodes in the cluster, creating storage that appears to the WSFC as a SAN.

Mavis Discount Tire has been using SIOS #SANLess clusters to protect its business critical SQL applications for more than four years. The SIOS software provides high availability cluster protection without slowing performance. By using SANless clusters, Mavis IT staff also eliminated the single point of failure risk of a shared storage cluster. “The SIOS DataKeeper Cluster Edition software is a good technology for a company that is growing rapidly. It is easy to use and eliminates the need to buy unnecessary SAN hardware or redundant switches,” said Schwartz.
