Register Now

Location: Howard Community College — Charles I. Ecker Business Training Center
6751 Columbia Gateway Drive, Columbia, MD
Date: April 21, 2014
Time: 6:30 – 9:00 PM Eastern

Additional Information: Baltimore SQL Server User Group

Session Abstract

Title – Performance Troubleshooting Using Wait Statistics

One of the first things you should check when investigating performance issues are wait statistics – as these can often point you in the direction for further analysis. Unfortunately many people misinterpret what SQL Server is telling them and jump to conclusions about how to solve the problem – what is often called ‘knee-jerk performance tuning’. In this session, you will learn what waits are, how to analyze them, and potential solutions to common problem patterns.

Cost: This is a free event, food and refreshments will also be provided at no cost courtesy of SIOS Technology.

Session Abstract

Stop me if you’ve heard this one, “This query is slow, let’s update statistics.” But what does updating statistics *really* do to your query performance? And is it the right solution? While updating statistics may provide a short-term solution, it can bury the true root cause. If you’re not familiar with what happens to query plans when you update statistics, then don’t miss this session. We’ll set the stage with a review of what statistics are, how the optimizer uses them, and discuss the various ways you can update them. Then we’ll explore what happens to plans when you *do* update statistics, and you’ll see why that might not always be the right long-term solution

Do More With Less: SQL Central Management Server and SQL Agent
Two of the of the most under-utilized management features of SQL Server are the Central Management Server and the SQL Agent Multi-Server Administration tools. The CMS is a powerful little tool creates a catalog of servers that allows you to execute any query or script against multiple servers at the same time. The SQL Agent Multi-Server Administration (MSX) tool allows you to create a SQL Agent job on one server and then deploy it to multiple servers instantly. When used in conjunction with each other, you have a powerful set of features that make managing your enterprise a lot simpler.

SQL Server MVP Mike Hillwig will show you how to to deploy these two powerful features right out of the box without writing a single line of new code.
